In my writing on reflection 4.1, I wasn’t really surprised by my answers. I think I’ve realized what type of students I identify with (The underdogs, the ones who need help, who are shy or aren’t the popular kids) and what types of students intimidate me (The students who blatantly disregard rules and who show no respect for me). I’ve had run-ins with students such as this before and it was a struggle.
In order to be a successful teacher I think I will need to work on confidence. The best way I can see myself developing this is figuring out my “foundation,” or who I am as a teacher, as we discussed in our Middle School Social Studies Methods course. Also, I can learn to develop strategies to deal with students who are belligerent and find ways to connect with them. I think my experiences as a student lend to empathizing with those who are unmotivated and have tough situations. I can build confidence in approaching them too. Finally, I can work on not taking things personally.
Perhaps the most significant method of classroom management I’ve learned this semester that will aid me in connecting with the students is that I need to develop meaningful connections with them. I can establish caring relationships with them (p. 87). I think our classes have given us some good ideas about developing functional, positive classroom management plans and how to avoid discipline through providing interesting, engaging and relevant lessons.
